Engineering a way forward

Meghashree dreams of becoming a Software Engineer when she grows up. A studious, young girl of 15 years, she studies in Standard X at the Sharada Vilas High School in Mysore.

Though she faces some challenges in life, nothing seems to dampen her ambition to succeed in life. Her mother works as a peon in a private school close to home, and single-handedly takes care of Meghashree and her two younger siblings.

Meghashree understands the realities of the precarious financial position the family is in. With her younger brother in Standard IV and sister in Standard VIII, Meghashree knows that there will be no extra money to put her through an engineering degree. She knows that earning a scholarship will be her only way to achieve her dream.

She is described as a well behaved girl by her teacher, someone who is very focused on achieving her goals. By eating the Akshaya Patra mid-day meals every day, Meghashree gets the nutrition she needs to study hard and work towards her scholarship. Describing how the Akshaya Patra food has helped the whole family in general, Meghashree says, “Mother leaves for work as early as six in the morning and is busy till six in the evening. She doesn't have time to cook at home. Earlier, before we started getting the midday meal, it was difficult for mother since she would wake up at 4 a.m. every day to cook for us! Now my siblings and I have the mid-day meal at school. It is tasty and filling. It keeps us going till evening when I make something after reaching home.”
