A new Akshaya Patra kitchen opens at Cuttack!

Staying focused on its aim to keep expanding and reach out to 5 million children by 2020, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has launched its 23rd kitchen at Cuttack in Odisha. This centralised kitchen was inaugurated by Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, as well as General Surat Singh Sandhu, the Chairman of The Kusuma Foundation and Pankaj Vinayak Sharma, Country Leader of The Kusuma Foundation.

The kitchen currently has the capacity to feed 45,000 children across 190 government schools on every school day. However the Foundation aims to increase this capacity to 100,000 meals a day, by 2015.  Right now the kitchen undertakes the cooking of 5.5 tons of rice, 3.5 tons of vegetables and 1.2 tons of dal (lentils) every day.

Like all The Akshaya Patra Foundation centralised kitchens, the Cuttack kitchen comes equipped with state-of-the-art machinery that allows it to undertake efficient, hygienic and high-quality cooking on a large scale. With boilers, rice cleaning machines, cold storage, conveyor belts and even 20 specially designed meal distribution vehicles, the Cuttack kitchen is all set to feed its hungry beneficiaries.

The kitchen has been primarily funded by The Kusuma Trust UK. Aside from this the kitchen has been funded by RC Infinity Foundation, Kolkata; LIC Golden Jubilee Foundation; NALCO and the Odisha Mining Corporation.

While this is the 3rd Akshaya Patra kitchen in Odisha, the Foundation has 22 other kitchens across 10 states in India, feeding 1.39 million children across 10,631 government schools every day. By providing food for education, the Foundation aims to realise its vision that no child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.
