Appearances are often deceiving. Pooja at first seems like a shy child, but as conversation progresses she astounds you with her joy, creativity, and intelligence. An all-rounder of sorts, Pooja enjoys music and dance, taking part in various arts and cultural activities at her school, as well as participates whole heartedly in her academics. Her favourite subjects are Mathematics and English, and this bright young girl aims to become a teacher one day to pass on her knowledge.
Pooja also has an admirable amount of inner strength. Her brother is studying in standard X while her sister is in her second year of PUC. Her mother is mute and partially deaf, and her father works at the local Water Supply and Sewerage Board. However, he maintains a small job there, one that is barely enough to support the family.
She however takes this in stride and communicates with her mother through a slate that her mother carries with her. According to Pooja, her mother’s impairment is no obstacle to her, and on the contrary, it has just served to make her stronger.
Pooja shows her commanding nature as she is allowed the responsibility of taking care of the class in her teacher’s absence. It is this drive and commitment to succeed that we can see in every aspect of Pooja’s life that makes us sure of her bright future.
A beneficiary of the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme, Pooja now also has the backing she needs to succeed in life. With the daily nutritious, tasty meal being assured to her every day, Pooja can concentrate on achieving her goals, so she can fulfil her dreams of becoming a teacher when she grows up.
