Very often, all the help in the world will not aid you if you do not help yourself. 12 year old Kavita, a young beneficiary of The Akshaya Patra Foundation mid-day meal, seems to be someone who subscribes to this concept. A student of the Chikkasandra Government Higher Primary School in Bangalore, Kavita is a smart young lady who dreams of being a respected, successful woman in the future.
With an uncanny understanding of the world she lives in, Kavita is very particular about how she is all put together, in school. In her tidy uniform and her hair combed back into a neat braid, Kavita tells us that she loves learning English. She enjoys the language so much that when she is alone, she practices by speaking to herself in English and then assesses her progress and gets her mistakes corrected by her teachers!
Kavita helps out at home with the household chores and helps in making dinner for the family. Both Kavita’s parents are daily wage earners, while her older sister studies at a neighbouring school. Kavita show none of the usual trappings of childhood as she wisely explains that she doesn’t mind doing her share of the housework, since it is helping to forge herself into a responsible adult.
Kavita has set her sights on becoming a manager at a government organisation. Betraying maturity beyond her years she explains that such a position will bring her a lot of responsibility and respect, as well as give her an opportunity to give back to the structure that has provided her with such good facilities like her school.
Today Kavita is already getting a taste of the responsibility and respect that the future hopefully holds for her as she is currently the class monitor in her teacher’s absence. Kavita is among over a million other young children that are beneficiaries of The Akshaya Patra Foundation mid-day meal programme, which gives them a fighting chance to help themselves make their dreams come true.
