The Akshaya Patra Foundation brought their mid-day meal programme to Andhra Pradesh in October 2008, when they started their kitchens in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. These centralised kitchens together serve 60,098 mid-day meals to 461 government schools every day.
Taking their vision that no child shall be denied an education because of hunger to Andhra Pradesh, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has worked hard in the last several years to alleviate hunger and malnutrition in the state. Today the Hyderabad kitchen feeds 54,849 government school children while the Visakhapatnam kitchen feeds 5,249.
Aside from the mid-day meal programme running across the state, the kitchens also serve food to anganwadi children. The Anganwadi programme is a nursery school programme whereby the mid-day meal is served to infants, pregnant and lactating mothers, and school drop outs.
The Hyderabad kitchen started its Anganwadi programme in November 2012. Today it feeds 14,745 infants between the ages of six months to three years. It also feeds 5,049 children between three to six years and 6,157 pregnant and lactating women. The Visakhapatnam Anganwadi programme started in 2011 and feeds 34,241 children and 7086 pregnant and lactating women every day. The beneficiaries are served a nutritious diet of Daliya Kichidi, milk sweet, rice and leaf dal, jaggery pongal and snacks like muruku, biscuits, energy bytes, peanut candy etc.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation is constantly looking for avenues to reach out to more children every day. Plans are underway to build another kitchen in the state and also increase the reach of this SNP (supplement nutrition program) to another 30,000 individuals across the state.
By bringing not just children but pregnant and lactating mothers under the scheme of the programme, Akshaya Patra ensures that the right nutrition is reaching those in need every day. It is only by helping to alleviate hunger that we can combat other social evils like disease, lack of education, lack of employment, poverty , crime and many others. Help The Akshaya Patra Foundation make a difference in this world.
