Akshaya Patra begins Anganwadi feeding programme in Agra

The Akshaya Patra Foundation inaugurated the Agra branch of its Anganwadi feeding programme on 14 October, 2014. The undertaking was flagged off by the Chief Guest District Magistrate of Agra, Pankaj Kumar; the Chief Development officer Paliwal N.K.; District Programme Officer and other dignitaries.

Akshaya Patra will be providing the mid-day meal  to Anganwadi children across two blocks in the region – the Achnera block and the Agra Shahar centers. Overall Akshaya Patra will be feeding 38,000 children between the ages of 3 and 6 across 700 centers. The food for this initiative will be cooked from the Akshaya Patra Vrindavan kitchen.

Akshaya Patra has undertaken Anganwadi cooking in other areas too. In Visakhapatnam the Foundation feeds 34,241 Anganwadi children a day, while in Hyderabad 25,768 children are fed the tasty, nutritious mid-day meal daily.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation through its initiative to provide food to Anganwadis in India aims to provide the right nutrition to infants, lactating mothers and school drop-outs.

In order to combat the malnutrition that affects underprivileged children all over India, Akshaya Patra knows that it is not sufficient to just provide food to school going children. By providing much needed nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers Akshaya Patra ensures that the mothers and their unborn child is in good health, and strong enough to face the challenges of the future.

Initiatives like this shows that Akshaya Patra has developed a deep understanding of classroom hunger in India, and has taken a long-term perspective on how to tackle the issue.
