Akshaya Patra Foundation – A Promise for a Better Future

The potential of a mid day meal is underrated sometimes. A mid day meal is more about free food that acts as an incentive for children to attend school; it’s a promise of a future. A child who has turned to labor only dreams of getting his next meal. Hunger acts as an obstacle, holding them back from realizing their dreams.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation believes that the delight and potential of one mid day meal goes far beyond just filling a hungry stomach. It equals an opportunity for education, ambition and a future.

It’s a fact that a hungry stomach cannot focus on anything but food. So, unless this basic survival need is met, it’s quite impossible for a child to plan and aim to achieve. Hunger curbs the motivation required for future goals. For children to be successfully educated, they need to be fed. An energized child will be able to concentrate on academics. Nutrition and care is essential for every child’s development.

Here is an anecdote of a little boy that tells the power of one wholesome meal:

Sunny Kheralia, a 13-year-old boy from Rajasthan is a Grade 7 student. His large family included his parents, three brothers and a sister. His father works as a sweeper in a local hospital earning a salary of around Rs. 3,000 per month.

Sunny is a brilliant student who scores very high grades in his academics. He studies sincerely and enjoys the meal he receives in school. Sunny is a beneficiary of Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal programme. He says, “I enjoy eating the lunch meal provided by the Akshaya Patra Foundation.”

Sunny has grown up seeing his father sweeping the hospital corridor every day. With the education he has been receiving he hopes to bring a change in the family, especially for his father. Sunny aspires to be a doctor and work in the same hospital where his father works. This instance evidently brings forth the benefit of education and the potential of one wholesome meal in transforming society one step at a time.

Akshaya Patra Foundation provides free lunch meals to 1.3 million schoolchildren in India every day. The organization was founded in 2000, and 13 years of its successful journey are evident by its achievements in securing education, health and hope for so many children in government schools. Akshaya Patra  aims to reach out to 5 million children by 2020.
